Dynamic transformation of the economy through digitalization
Mitigating the consequences of the coal phase-out and climate change for regions
Structural change in the Central German mining area: Alongside the food industry and the energy sector, the chemical industry is one of the biggest economic drivers in Saxony-Anhalt.
Major changes in these lead markets therefore also have a significant impact on the affected regions.
Where coal-fired power plants disappear and coal is no longer mined, there is a lack of jobs – for the population in rural areas and in conurbations.
At the same time, there are many areas with undiscovered power reserves that need to be discovered.
– This is the situation in southern Saxony-Anhalt, i.e. in the Burgenlandkreis and Saalekreis districts, in the city of Halle (Saale) and in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Mansfeld-Südharz, with a view to the nationwide coal phase-out, which must be implemented by law by 2038 at the latest.
With the help of structural change, Saxony-Anhalt should still be an attractive business location with modern jobs and a place worth living in 20 years from now.
Climate change is also a growing cause for concern: drought or flooding – unpredictable natural phenomena and extreme weather events could make it more difficult to ensure that the population is supplied with sufficient quantities of affordable food products in the future.
Research into ways of effectively counteracting climate change has been underway for several years.
Not yet with the desired success.
The first consequences of the changing climate conditions are now also becoming apparent for agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt.
Technological progress has great potential to offer here.
There are many opportunities for new approaches.
By using digitalization, many areas in agriculture can be optimized and developed in the coming years, not only in cultivation and harvesting, but also in breeding, crop rotation and fertilization, which will create new needs and result in new business areas and jobs.
